Although conference committees have permitted members to negotiate free of public scrutiny, some opponent of expanded betting opined that lawmakers should have made an exception for a bill with long term implications especially for Massachusetts. In response to this Massachusetts Governor, Deval Patrick said that he wants a hand in final casino bills talks. In context, Patrick said that as there is not much time left in Legislature’s formal session, he is eager to be active in the negotiations, no sooner the six member house and senate conference committee come to a final compromise.
The gambling opponents gave a call to Governor Deval Patrick to immediately name a commission to examine the range of costs likely needed from expanded gambling or to veto landmark legislation. The supporters of the house and approved bills claimed that the expanded gambling issues have been studied repeatedly and for many years while the opponents in this matter have asserted that markets have changed and the state lacks proper understanding of financial ramifications. In this context, some gambling proponents demanded that without properly analyzing the serious costs. The letter writers also requested Patrick to give a rethought for casinos.
