The New York state liquor board is alleged of granting illegal liquor catering permits to Turning Stone Casino & Resort. This particular resort cum casino is actually operated and owned by the Oneida Indian Nation in Verona, New York. The issue was brought under the limelight by three restaurant owner associations. Since the inauguration in july16, 1993, the casino was repeatedly denied from the liquor catering license by the authority.
Although the authority has deprived Turning stone from serving liquor in their resorts and casinos but indirectly it has permitted some temporary license through The Beeches Restaurant (physically located in Rome is owned by Christopher Destito, husband of RoAnn Destito, the Democratic state Assembly woman) that allows Beeches to serve liquors in Turning Stone’s lounges and night clubs.
A state judge in New York was asked to stop the liquor servings in Turning Stone and cancel the related permits by the three restaurant-owner associations
The lawyer representing the group who has filed the suit, David Vickers said that if the authority has no objection in granting a liquor catering permit to Turing Stone, then we have no reason opposing it.
The Beeches qualified for the alcohol catering license by transforming its restaurants into private clubs. Another qualifying condition was they will apply for permits regularly for each bar at each restaurant.
The debate has stirred the concerns of many local associations and finally the group against the permit comprises of Onida county Board of Legislators Minority Leader Michael Hennessy, Verona resident Harry Burton; and D-Sherrill, Chapter of the Empire State Restaurant & Tavern Association; Hotel & Restaurant and Liquor Dealers associations from Herkimer and Madison counties. Probably there might be some more joining the group by the 16th December, the first hearing date.
